When the soul is still, the mind is clear.

In a chaotic world, stillness, defined as freedom from agitation, is the atmosphere we need. The word is grounded in two principles that are tough to build but essential to lead a good life: trust and peace. Specifically, trust that one who lives a principled life and strives to be at peace is well on their way to a life worth living.

Stillness amidst chaos

We live in a chaotic world filled with fears of natural disasters, each other, and our very own creation – artificial intelligence (AI). Indeed, we inhabit an unstill world.

Throughout several decades, like many, I mastered the art of living an unstill life. By all observable indications, I always had it together. And held it together! It took me decades to realize that appearing to hold it together for everyone else while living the chaos inside was costing me too much. So, I thought, what if I switch it around? i.e., allow people to see the chaos inside. Well, the thought ceased to exist as soon as it emerged because chaos within me translates into sadness and melancholy: An emotion and mood that many may not have the desire or capacity to bear in another. Therefore, I went back to the drawing board.

After many years of plowing and planting came a harvest when I realized I never needed to prove anything. I only need to give. Then, I realized that words can cloud understanding, and the void of silence can convey more than the vibrations of a voice.

Today and tomorrow

In 2026, my theme is stillness. Notably, it is not a resolution, as I do not give that system much credence! When I believe a change in behavior or approach is urgently warranted or beneficial, I make it. I feel no need to wait for a specific date to do what I believe I need to do. Therefore, I enter 2026 with a hopeful yet still heart and mind. – I will embrace the beauty of leading a life where the ordinary reveals gems as I dwell in an atmosphere that is so still that I can hear the wind blowing as loud as a tree falling. So, every dawn and night, amidst the chaos of the world, I say to myself, “Be still, my soul.” And stillness is defining my world this year.
