The Key to Advancement
To advance, one must ask the right question.
Recently, I heard three intelligent and accomplished women say, I want more recognition at work. Not empty words or plaques. Instead, a promotion to a more advanced career stage! I believe I have earned it! They always add more to my plate, and I deliver great results! In return, all I receive from my manager are placating words like “We value you. Keep doing great work. I am working on your promotion and fighting for you. – I need to get through some technicalities.”
All sounds like the professional version of the message: It’s Not You. It’s Me. – The softened yet cruel way to let one down and avoid discussing the real issue by claiming responsibility for a problem without naming it.
What is true?
Feeling like their manager is stringing them along, the employees thought, certainly! I am not the problem, but this is absolutely about me! It is about my future and the well-being of myself and my family. You are playing me like a puppet, and it is not fair. All I want is to know the truth.
Herein lies the opportunity: Ask the right question! The right question may not yield the answer we crave. However, it provides clarity.
Requirement for advancement.
Sometimes, we seek the truth but ask questions that do not yield beneficial answers. i.e., answers that provide clarity and enable progress.
To gain clarity, the three female leaders had to have a crucial career conversation with their managers and ask a critical question: How can I add value that successfully enables us to implement our long-term strategy? If the response requires them to contribute differently or add value that is different from previously expected, that is their opportunity for advancement. But if the response is for them to keep doing the same with no end in sight, a promotion may not be in discussion. One might receive a bonus for a valiant effort or a great win. However, we rarely invest more in salary and benefits to have someone do what they are already doing.
To advance, we must gain clarity, and we do so by asking the right questions. Unsurprisingly, this is beneficial personally as well.
