Some time ago, I needed to see my neurologist, but he wasn’t available. Therefore, I agreed to see the Physician Assistant (PA). To my surprise, she was tremendous: knowledgeable, quick but not hasty, and attuned to the connection between psychological health and physical well-being. It turned out to be one of my most valuable neurological appointments.

A one-off?

Instantly, I recalled a related incident! Days earlier, my mom learned that she could receive more expedient care if she opted to see a PA rather than a doctor. Somewhat reluctantly, she agreed. After her appointment, she was all smiles and went on and on about how fabulous the visit was. She added that the PA was thorough, collaborative, and knowledgeable – to the degree that she decided to schedule future visits with her!

Naturally, it got me thinking! For a long time, society has placed high value on titles, accreditations, and degrees. Leaving those without them perceived as less than. However, from 2020 to 2024, the PA workforce in the United States grew by nearly 28%. And there is no shortage of doctors, as universities are producing over 29,000 graduates annually. Notably, physician assistants are also significantly less taxing on a hospital’s P&L than doctors, as for every doctor, a hospital can hire two PAs – on average!

So, what’s going on?

Is the title of doctor not as valuable any longer? Are hospitals more focused on profit than expertise nowadays? Or is it simply that Physician Assistants are aware they have more to prove when they interact with patients and have stepped up their game?

Who knows? Time will tell.

Certainly, there is a change in tide, and it serves as a cautionary tale for future generations to build their careers by seeking to make an impact – not chasing glory. – What was highly regarded yesterday may not be as valuable today. And tomorrow, it might be insignificant. Therefore, we must choose well: prioritize meaning and impact over others’ perception.
